McCain on Russia’s Puppet Show

U.S. Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain had some strong words in reaction to Putin’s annual five-hour press junket yesterday:

“I think that Mr. Putin is trying to restore the old Russian empire. Obviously he is perpetuating himself in power in Russia virtually indefinitely by this setup of having basically a protege, someone who is doing his bidding as president while he serves as the prime minister,” McCain said. “We knew the puppet show was going on, we just didn’t know who the puppet was.” (…) “I’m not concerned that we will see a reignition of the old Cold War. Russia doesn’t have the assets or the capability or anything else to pose the kind of challenge” that it did during the days of the Soviet Union, he said.

Oddly, Hillary Clinton was the only U.S. presidential candidate that Putin attacked yesterday… Read more from McCain on Russia here and here.

It’s not the least bit odd. For good reason, Putin is afraid of McCain, a battle-hardened combat veteran. But he is a thug and a bully, and he has no problem attacking women, who he perceives to be weak and unlikely to fight back. It’s classic cowardice and male chauvanism, not at all difficult to see through.

Putin doesn’t need to speak about McCain directly.Rather, ever time McCain opens his mouth these days he proves that he is nothing more than an old cranky southern fly-boy. McCain actually makes George Bush look semi-intelligent and restrained. Our America should pray that Obama is elected. McCain would be a sorry continuation of the Bush disaster.

I watched on BBC “Inside Russia” report, and I am so glad to see person like you working on this issue. After that, I type your web site and I hope others do the same all over the world. What we see on our national television is always to far away from true. The only thing that I do from my position is to share with friends and pupils, (I am a Physics teacher) what I have learned from your work. Let we known how we can sustain your job.Thank you so much again for what you and friends have done so far.

“Russia doesn’t have the assets or the capability or anything else to pose the kind of challenge” that it did during the days of the Soviet Union.”True, and comforting. But it does have one thing that the USSR didn’t, namely a KGB field agent who has ruled the country for more than eight years now.And if Russian history is any gauge (remember the story of the UN and the shoe?) Russia is more than capable of acting irrationally, far beyond its actual power, and certainly could cause at least as much trouble as Bin Laden (indeed, it may be assisting him).
