Following a number of false starts and peculiar circumstances at the beginning of the much-anticipated Anna Politkovskaya murder trial, Russia’s chief prosecutor, Yuri Chaika, has come forward to defend the ongoing investigation, insisting that Russian authorities had begun working with Interpol to catch the killer who, he says, has been identified. One can’t help but think that this is merely an attempt to pacify public dissatisfaction over the seemingly endless inconclusivity of this case. Two years on from her murder, will the Kremlin really allow justice to be done for Politkovskaya?
