A new security policy paper has highlighted espionage and the fragility of the economy as threats to Russian security. Energy is however the main issue: ‘in a competition for resources, problems that involve the use of military force cannot be excluded’, the paper warns. According to the Times, the Arctic is cited as the focal point for energy conflicts. Is the fact that the Kremlin’s report was published on the same day as the UN’s deadline for filing claims to the seabed coincidence or publicity stunt? Russia has vetoed a plan to salvage the OSCE mission in Georgia, as the Kremlin demands that South Ossetia be recognized as an independent state. Putin has said that a peace deal with Japan can only be concluded if the terms ‘meet the national interests of the Russian Federation.’
Mikhail Gorbachev is reportedly to create an ‘independent social-democratic party’. The last president of the USSR has called United Russia ‘a worse version of the Soviet Communist Party’, and said ‘all monopolies are rotten‘. President Medvedev has also taken a shot at Russia’s foremost political party, saying it should be compulsory for all parties to participate in debates – something United Russia has previously refused to do.
The parliamentary majority will reportedly support a proposed change to the Constitutional Court. The Telegraph suggests that these amendments are part of Putin’s comeback plan: ‘if there are early elections it would be necessary to ensure that Medvedev’s departure is not challenged‘. ‘I would be pleased to meet him but Obama is the partner of the Russian president‘, says Prime Minister Putin on Obama’s visit. In a reponse gently cen[forgotten by the editor ]( on matter of Brazil indepency on phosphats and water ) i have underlined that today most geopoliticians like French Aymeric Chauprade are predicting wars for natural ressources : Food , water , and energy on the ” scramble for Africa ” 19th model or ” Great game ” model .It’s so obvious ………………….It’s also obvious that the arctic which is the last ” last frontier” on energy and mineral deposits will be a ” flash point ” . It’s also a strategic zone for new maritime routes between Europe and Asia .That’s the reason why i have made my blogue since may 2008 ;0)Unfortunatly i have not the time to cover all issues like the Russian security doctrine or the meeting of northern defense ministers ;0(
Nikolai Patrushev, who heads the Security Council, once flew to the North Pole to plant a Russian flag.One correction of the ” The Times ” article :I don’t think that Mr Patrushev was present during Artika 2007 expedition .The expedition was diriged by Mr Chilingarov .Mr Patroushev DID reunite all the ” siloviki ” , but it was on Frantz Josef islands in autumn 2008 but DID NOT plant the Russian flag on the sea floor .HE WAS , and perhaps planted the Russian flag , BUT it was in the ANTARCTIC !( The place where live penguins for the journalist who wrote this article )http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolai_Patrushev .And , as EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOW ( and especially journalists which write such rubbish ) , ANTARCTIC is the SOUTH POLE !
Resources have never ceased to be an important point of contention among nations — why, just look at the history of oil. There’s nothing new in there. And if you think the next major wars will be just about resources… I’ll still guess that religion (e.g. Islam vs. the West) and politics (e.g. Israelis and Palestinians) will have their part in it.
