Today is Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s birthday, and sadly, the sixth birthday he has been made to spend in prison, deprived of liberty and held away from family, for no reason beyond that of the caprices of an unaccountable power unrestrained by law. Though in the middle of his second trial, there were no hearings today – in fact Mike spend the afternoon doing a Q&A with the Russian public on Gazeta. Some 16 supporters celebrating his birthday were placed under arrest in Moscow. For those who can, I encourage them to stop by the official trial site to drop a birthday greeting of support. I am grateful to Jeremy Putley who published a very nice letter on A Step At A Time.
Happy birthday, Mikhail Borisovich – let’s spend the next one somewhere else.

I’m a bit disappointed by two aspects of your report about the arrests.First, it’s lacking in detail. Don’t you communicate with these people? Why don’t they have a blog to tell us exactly what happened? Were they on the street or the sidewalk? Did they have signs? Were they mistreated when they were arrested? Frankly, the whole business seems badly organized and hardly likely to generate the kind of publicity they obviously want. Perhaps you should have words with them.Second, I fail to understand how you can simply report such incidents without editorializing on them. “Oh, some protesters got arrested, we thought you’d like to know.” The Kremlin would perceive this attitude as weakness, and it certainly isn’t likely to generate much support for these protesters.
It’s a birthday card from Bob to MBK – not a report on the arrests. I will ask around to see if we can get some more information though … I agree that it seemed badly organized.
