Certainly Russian toughness gets better results for Russia than unilateral preemptive Russian concessions, which was the Kozyrev method.

Right, exactly, tell that to Obama. You sound more and mroe like La Russophobe every day. The hostility is so ingrained, and the desire for unending conflict will not be challenged.

James, it wasn’t known to work, was opposed by more of the Czech and Polish people than supported it, irritated people who are giving us an alternative to NATOs threatened supply lines through Pakistan, was ostensibly for a threat that doesn’t exist, and was expensive as hell.It was brain dead from the start, which is no suprise since Bush/Cheyney dreamed it up. Continuing it harmed US interests full stop. Now if continuing something harmful to US interests just to avoid giving the Russian government, whose cooperation on Afghanistan we need, a “victory” for “Russian toughness” then so be it. Your argument sounds like saying in 2003 “Well invading Iraq is a dumb idea, but the Russians oppose it, so we gotta invade Iraq anyway just to avoid giving ‘Russian hardliners’ a victory, unless they give us something to not do the dumb thing.”
