Documenting Grave Allegations of Rights Violations, New White Paper Raises Alarm over Tanzania’s Presidential Campaign

Robert Amsterdam, the founder of Amsterdam & Partners LLP and the international lawyer advising opposition leader Tundu Lissu, has released a new white paper today documenting evidence of acts of unlawful intimidation and persecution of his client and his party by the CCM Government of President John Magufuli which have attacked the foundational rights and processes necessary for a free and fair democratic election in Tanzania.

The white paper, which can be downloaded here, demands that “President Magufuli and the NEC must cease all intimidation of opposition candidates, ensure that Chadema’s polling agents are permitted to observe polling stations as permitted by law, and the NEC must immediately approve those opposition candidates who were disqualified on outrageous pretexts and continue to wait on the appeals process, which the NEC is intentionally dragging out. The safety and continued candidacy of Tundu Lissu must also be upheld, who has faced both threats to his life and continuing attempts to disqualify his candidacy for president.”
