Under a new deal signed by the two countries’ presidents, Russia will provide South Africa’s nuclear power stations with uranium until at least 2017, which, according to Rosatom, will give Russia control over 45% of South Africa’s uranium market.  Malaysia’s Petronas will pay a reported $50 million compensation to Uzbekistan over their production sharing agreements.  Iran is looking to ramp up its gasoline production, despite high costs, in order to reduce dependency on imports and ‘thwart Western plans‘.  The Economist on ‘dirty‘ Canadian crude and the clean resources required to produce it; and on the failed efforts to clean up China’s freshwater Tai Lake.
