Following the tragic death of Russian photojournalist Dmitry Chebotayev in Iraq, the Russian government has suprisingly and swiftly lept to action to defend the safety of journalists. According a statement cited RFE, the Foreign Ministry is calling for a “painstaking inquiry” into the incident, and a “thorough investigation” of Chebaotayev’s death. It is great to see that Russian authorities are finally acting in defense of journalists. It would seem an appropriate time for them to also call for painstaking inquiries and thorough investigations into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya and the death of Ivan Safronov, among others.
